Interdisciplinary parameter of comparison (history, sociocultural history

The cultures in both the play and the Nigerian historical documents referred to depicted parallel issues towards women.

The women in Nigeria culture are symbolized as furniture in the house and they are the slave for men - struggle against patriarchal cultures and customs

Women in Nigerian culture are not expected to participate in formal work activities outside the home. They are also seen as silent (no agency)

Women are victims of culture and tradition - inimical to women's emancipitaion

Socio-cultural history

Wazobia's role and character is in itself a political statement on Onwueme's part - reflecting the perception of Igbo society of anyone who speaks out or who dares to challenge roles. (Text & Context Across Disciplines - Part II)

" Scholars of postcolonial dramatic theory often comment on Onwueme’s work and its portrayal of both the postcolonial and colonial fears of the Igbo people she so often writes about. Of particular note is Onwueme’s engagement with the idea of gender, a traditional Igbo society, and the conflicts that arise between women educated in western style and men whose ideas stem from a shared colonial past. " (Kimi Diana Johnson, 2008)

"We live in a society where women have it very hard. Their lives are manipulated by others." (Onwueme 10)
